Farm Cottages Tumkur, India

The client’s objective was to provide a sustainable tourism option, outside the Bangalore city limits. It is designed for families who go on the weekend getaways to escape city life and spend some quality time amidst nature. Organic farming, which is integrated into the resort, is the central activity. Guests have an opportunity to get involved in the workings of a farm while educating and creating awareness about healthy food amongst children.

The site divided by two axis walls, adjacent to which the cottage are built, creates a sense of privacy for the living spaces, away from the activities on-site. The axis wall becomes the common wall for each of the cottages. Two sides of the cottages are open to the outside, and the façades become a combination of furniture and openings. The flexible walls, allow the guest to control the privacy, views, ventilation, and light. The furniture acts as a membrane to the outside. The axis wall is built of stone available on site, the cottages have bamboo construction, plastered with mud, and the roof is composed of bamboo-reinforced ferro-cement.
