Homes designed to suit the joint family structure, which used to be the norm, is slowly decreasing. Joint family structures have several benefits to the society and families but in contemporary times have become obsolete mainly because of the lack of privacy. This design allows and encourages such a family structure, while providing privacy and flexibility.
Each living unit is connected to a studio, instead of a guest room, with separate access and services. A young family with visiting parents could inhabit the studio. Later, the oldest children could have the studio as their work/ living space. This sort of flexibility could adapt to the lifestyle of the family and encourage the family to stay together, instead moving to individual homes.
