Mixed-use House Elements Calicut, India

The clients are an organic food and articles manufacturer and traders. They sell and export a variety of spices, food-grains, oils, fragrances, nuts, bamboo articles, handmade paper articles, etc. produced by cooperatives from all over India.

The objective was to design a mixed-use building- flexible and adaptable to their needs while using sustainable, local materials and constructions methods. Rammed earth load-bearing walls and pillars, optimized concrete slab construction, with a perforated wooden façade on three sides. The south and the west sides are made with recycled wood. The wooden façade encloses the balcony, acting as a buffer from the heat and the busy street. The core of the services and circulation zone, in the rammed earth, is concentrated on the east. The basement acts as storage and sorting area for their products. The organic product store and a cafe plus kitchen are situated on the ground floor. The first floor consists of office space with several workstations and the second floor is a living quarter for guests. The facade elements and the earth walls reflect the identity of the organic nature of the brand.
