VILLA CATERINA WATCH TOWER BANGALORE, INDIA

The project is a shelter for the watchmen of the building, where the IN:CH office is located. Though small in magnitude and scale it has an enormous potential to create an identity for the users, the viewers and for us as architects and professionals. It is an opportunity to create equity through design and not through resources.

Now they have a space for all the daily activities and a shelter with a better sense of quality compared to the wealthier residents of the apartment building. The structure that looks like a playful wooden box that any child would love, but on closer inspection, has certain design elements that come together as a design customized for a watchman. The windows are small and strategically placed for them to have an overview of the entire space but at the same time giving them privacy. The frame is made of packaging wood, which is available widely at a low cost and is recyclable here for other kinds of use. This makes it sustainable and efficient.

The location of the shelter is integrated within the space beneath the staircase, which was ideal as there is two walls already present to give a sense of enclosure.
