Due to the different characters and backgrounds of the participants, every study trip is tremendously different and interesting. Through the informal exchange of information with one another, participants get to engage in several parallel conversations alongside the program content of the study trip.
True to the themes of art, architecture, and culture, we visited art galleries in Mumbai, with the help of IN:CH’s partner architecture school KRVIA. They organized guided tours and helped in showcasing the participatory work of slum dwellers and architects, handicrafts and also in witnessing the daily lives of some of the fishing communities in Mumbai.
In Delhi, the focus was to visit the ‘India Art Fair’ and the tour branched out to visits of the traditional gardens with Islamic architecture, the Swiss Embassy and to art galleries such as the exhibition by artist Arpita Singh.
The fourth Kochi-Muziris Biennale had a visible impact on the way exhibition spaces are perceived. The Biennale had such a deep influence on the locals that permanent art galleries have sprung up all around in a small town like Kochi. These galleries not only have a presence during the Biennale in the form of collateral spaces but are also open all year round and even have branches in different cities. Seeing contemporary art in the context of traditional buildings as well as observing the day-to-day activities of local people was a fantastic experience.
Each participant was left with precious memories, some incredible individual experiences and learning, which they took back from the trip.
