Slum School Mysore, India

The students had the task of planning and building something with the inhabitants of a slum according to their needs. Graves against the monsoon, a communal toilet or a dwelling?

Getting to know people from the lower strata of society can be quite daunting and overwhelming for privileged young students. Learning about people in a slum, being with them, dealing with them, analyzing their needs and separating feelings and facts was a formative experience. The imminent arrival of the monsoon in about 4 weeks contributed to the plight of the community.

The students worked on the development of an innovative method. With this, an efficient and cost-effective construction system for the construction of a hut could be achieved.

The success of the project lay in the simple self-construction-technique, without mechanical or professional workers.
Instead of using the new cabin for one or two families, the idea came to use the unit as a school for the children of the slum. The day after completion, the teacher was ready to teach the children.
