Urban development Kavika Bangalore, India

This site is surrounded by slums, dirty water, and an industrial area. What opportunity could the design site give for the neighboring inhabitants? A computer center, children’s playgrounds, seating spaces in the form of benches for elderly persons, community spaces, trees, and landscaping elements could be some of the interventions. Surveys of the population and interviews conducted showed that they wished for such beneficial facilities.

The project proposal connects the Indian philosophy with a western concept. Indians believe that life is divided into four phases: one learns in the years 0-20, puts the learning into practice at years 20-40 and imparts the knowledge and the experience between years 40-60. It is believed that each day after 60 is a gift.

The interpretation and translation of this philosophy resulted in the concept of equipping buildings with different programmes on four levels. The landscape divided the complexes in geometrical angles. This hybrid solution to the problem developed, as a result, of the people working in tandem with the students combined with their knowledge attained in the studio.
