Water Tank Tower Wayanad, India

The task was to design a water tower for a resort project in Kerala. The resort consisted of previously designed cottages built out of bamboo and the goal was to continue to highlight the diversity and strength that this resilient natural building material offers.

The tower is 13.25 meters tall, designed to hold two water tanks (for both fresh and grey water) of 3000 kg each and a viewing platform which can carry a load of 20 people. The maximum length of treated bamboo available was 6 meters. Thus, connecting several similar units while ensuring no bending of an individual unit, the required height and strength were achieved. The development of the appropriate geometry, accounting for the conditions and specifications was an intensive challenge. Integrated within the tower is a staircase leading to the tanks and the viewing platform. We are certain that this project when built, will be a distinguishing example presenting the versatility of bamboo.
